Nothing could be further from the truth. It has been blindsided by backroom tech innovators whose only approach is to “act with data”.

Fast-paced, idea-brave fintech teams don’t know how to build traditional structures, silos and departments. They don’t! They know speed, efficiency (of code & solution), customer journey, funneling, purchase patterns, interactions, automated compliance and reporting, and all the basics of client servicing and financial governance that need to underlie their products. (Entirely all of the stuff that banks should be experts at!)
So what’s marketing up to?

Airbnb enters the travel business
Well, it has finally hit the headlines. Surprise, surprise, Airbnb announced Airbnb Flights service to compete with airlines and travel agencies.
New Revenue Sources
Airbnb was busy ramping up Trips, Places, Services, and Experiences when suddenly they added Flights in late-2016 (by the way, they already have Homes).
We should probably call 2017 “The Year of Adding Revenue Sources”.

Airbnb’s story is a great example of how “truly connecting with customers” can unlock the gates of traditional industries and change the rules of the game.
Today hotel chains are silently rushing to have a stake in the “sharing economy”:
- AccorHotels (think Raffles Hotels) bought Onefinestay, a high-end homes sharing company.
- Hyatt trying to get employees connect with guests on a more casual basis (to perhaps compete with local Airbnb hosts).
- Wyndham Hotels (think Ramada Hotels) invests in LoveHomeSwap.
Still, I know people in the hotel and travel industries who are absolutely in denial about how things will play out. This is worse than not having an online or digital marketing strategy.
